Introduction to the issue to climate change

A Talk by Maura, at Main Conference

Abstract

Overwiev of some effects of climate change in the international level: greeenhouse gases and increase in temperature, different impacts and different positions of countries.

Main Description

To what are we really referring when we speak about global climate change? Why has this ecological crisis have been, since now, one of the strongest example of international political failure?

Climate change started roughly at the end of 18th century. Yet, it is only since 20 years that the phenomenon came to the attention of the public and substantial political reponses are still missing.

Speaker

I am a PhD student of the University of Brussels (Belgium). I came in Himachal Pradesh to develop the field research of my thesis, which is an ethnoecological research that studies the adaptation to climate change by the Gaddi community (Kangra and Chamba districts). The Himalayas are one of the world’s hotspots of global climate change. The phenomenon affects the natural resources and poses enormous difficulties for the nature-dependent indigenous populations. Nevertheless, it would be superficial and without much practical value to isolate the climate threat and to study it independently from the overall existing socio-economic, cultural and political changes impacting the populations. This means that researchers and policy makers should recognize the impacts of climate change within the whole context of the social-ecological system. My research aims to emphasizes the socio-cultural aspect of climate change adaptation in studying the Gaddi economies in mountainous areas.
