State of OS installers in Debian and its derivatives
A Talk by Raju Vindane (libregeekingkid), at Main Conference
Abstract
This talk will be an overview of all the installers present in Debian and its derivatives including Debian-Installer, Ubiquity, live-installer(from Linux Mint Project), BlankOn Installer (from BlankOn Linux Project) etc.
Main Description
Debian GNU/Linux, the universal operating system is one of the most widely used operating systems. A lot of other famous distributions( Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Elementary) are based on Debian. Debian uses debian-installer which is efficient enough for most people, but not for newbies. A lot of Debian derivatives have created there own installers but none of them have been ported back to Debian. Realizing this situation I decided to take the task of porting Ubiquity installer to debian.[1] Ubiquity is the most famous OS installer developed by Ubuntu. I worked for this task for over a month.
I also took a look at a lot of other installers in Debian derivatives. Calamares Installer - calamares.io live-installer (from Linux Mint Project) Parsix-Installer (From Parsix GNU/Linux) BlankON Installer ( from BlankON Linux project)
I'll be presenting an overview of all these Installer projects and my work done along with Ubiquity. My immediate goal is to package one of these installers in main Debian.
