Do more with Wikipedia - Welcome to DBpedia !

A Session by Prabhu Shiv Singh, at Main Conference

Abstract

When Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web in 1989, he revolutionized the way information was technically described. He coined the word “the Semantic Web”. “The Semantic Web provides a common framework that allows data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise, and community boundaries”. The Resource Description Format (RDF) is a general method for conceptual description or modeling of information that is implemented in web resources. DBpedia is a RDF version of the information in Wikipedia. This sessions will take you through: 1. The fundamental concepts of the Semantic Web 2. The fundamental structure if Wikipedia RDF through Research Interest example 3. Demonstrate how basic SPARQL queries can ask questions to a Research Area 4. How we run complex queries to research the data in a domain 5. How we can push the data to data-analysis and visualization applications

Main Description

When Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web in 1989, he revolutionized the way information was technically described. He coined the word “the Semantic Web”. “The Semantic Web provides a common framework that allows data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise, and community boundaries”. The Resource Description Format (RDF) is a general method for conceptual description or modeling of information that is implemented in web resources. DBpedia is a RDF version of the information in Wikipedia.

We love using Wikipedia as a source of reliable knowledge and reference. But what if we wanted to a detailed data-analysis of the facts mapped in Wikipedia. There comes DBpedia. By using a query language like SPARQL, you can throw the coolest and most complex questions to the Wikipedia data-set…and wuala…get amazing result-sets !

Whats more…you can push the result-sets into the coolest visualizations…and get more insights.

This session takes you from the start….what is the Semantic Web ? What is RDF, ontology, classes, properties, triples…There are hidden animals in the Semantic Web too…OWLs and TURTLEs…we unearth all of them as basic concepts.

The best way to grasp DBpedia is too pick an interest area in Wikipedia. Everyone who has worked in a domain, has used Wikipedia to research that domain…so just take that “example” domain to understand DBpedia. We will run basic queries in SPARQL to ask cool questions in that domain Then we can run complex queries to research the data in the domain and then display the results in visualizations to get better insights into that domain…or even other related domains

You will realize how the RDF structure of Wikipedia is formed, the effort it takes into making the mappings and the awesome result-sets it throws up. Wikipedia content is growing exponentially, and RDF of Wikipedia is far behind, so there is a lot of work to be done to fill the gap. It is extremely addictive for the Wikipedia nerd…beware of Wikipedia overload !

Lets take Wikipedia to the next level…lets DBpedia !
