Contributing to Real World Software

A Talk by rharish, at Main Conference

Abstract

How do I contribute to “Real World” Software ? The easiest way is contributing to Open Source projects and this talk would mainly deal with the same.

Main Description

Contributing to Open Source Technologies is one of the most efficient ways of developing one's skills and at the same time doing something that would actually be meaningful.

There are many ways or rather projects from where a beginner could start off. Personally, being an active KDE contributor and a past contributor to the Debian project as well as CrisisCommunicator, I'd be quoting examples from the same.

I'll update my talk slides over here : https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1e7pKFpx5mPT32ajm_4n2X57UPk3xmr50cnfynkU9zb8/edit?usp=sharing

Speaker

I'm a CS undergrad from India. I'm pursuing my bachelor's degree in Computer Science and engineering from Amrita University's Amritapuri campus.

I'm an Open Source enthusiast and I contribute to the KDE project (mainly the Plasma Mediacetner - my Season of KDE project) and now I'd working on Porting Kopete to the new KDE frameworks 5(KF5). I have previously done a couple of Debian packaging by packaging ruby gems for Diaspora as well as contributing to CrisisCommunicator(http://wiseearthtechnology.com/what-crisis-communicator)

I'm an active member of the FOSS club in our campus(http://foss.amrita.ac.in) and have organized two national level FOSS conferences - namely Debutsav '14 and conf.kde.in '15. While in Pune, I also attend the meetups of the Pune Linux User Group (PLUG) and have contributed to literacy drives in small capacity.

Apart from what has already been mentioned, I'm an avid Arsenal FC fan and love listening to psychedelic rock music. I'm a traveller and at the same time a real foodie as well.
